Using Soft Contact Lenses

When contact lenses are categorized based on the materials which they are made from, then you can probably divide them into three categories : hard ,soft  and RGP contact lenses.

All of these contact lenses have their various advantages as well as disadvantages and the contact lenses a person uses depends on their own particular preferences and what they conditions they suffer from, if any.

Hard contact lenses are made from  polymethyl methacrylate, otherwise referred to as PMMA or Perspex/Plexiglas.  These hard contact lenses are often referred to as second generation contact lenses – first generation contact lenses were made from glass and which have now become virtually extinct. Hard contact lenses have the disadvantage of allowing no oxygen to permeate through to the cornea, thereby potentially causing a number of undesirable side effects which can affect the health of the eyes.

Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses are also known as RGP contact lenses or GP contact lenses, and they were created to address the disadvantage of the Hard contact lenses. RGP lenses allow oxygen to get through to the cornea and they are also able to replicate the natural shape of the cornea making them the ideal lenses for people who suffer from astigmatism conditions.

Soft contact lenses are made from a number of different materials, their principal difference from Rigid Gas Permeable lenses is that they do not require a period of adaptation and hence they feel comfortable almost immediately.

Other than this, soft contact lenses also have various advantages as well. They are rather easy to clean when compared to RGP lenses and they can easily be removed and placed back into the eyes. When RGP or hard contact lenses are removed, their wearer will experience a momentary bout of blurry vision before being able to adjust to their surroundings visually, this is not the case with soft contact lenses. One more advantage of soft contact lenses is their cost factor, they tend to be much cheaper than other kinds of contact lenses.

Newer developments in technology have resulted in attempts to eliminate some of the disadvantages of other contact lens products. As time progresses newer kinds of contact lenses will become available and help people find those which suit their preferences best. However a visit to an optometrist or ophthalmologist will best acquaint you with the kind of lenses which are suitable for your use If you are already aware of this, then you can easily buy the contact lenses of your choice and which satisfies your needs over the Internet.
